Since the ’90s, the Internet has been evolving, from Web1 to the current Web3. In Web1, the internet consisted of static pages that users would casually read or surf. It was read-only and internet users were just consumers of information.

In Web2, the internet was no longer a read-only model, but a read/write model, where information could change based on a reader’s preferences. Users could even upload content onto the websites of others. It gave users more control over the content, but users had no control over their data.

Web3 is an improvement on Web2, allowing users to not only write and read but to also own their data, moving from a centralization of ownership or decision-making to a decentralization. This will be done by taking advantage of blockchain technology to offer data security and privacy, amongst others.

Gaming involves playing an electronic video game, which is often done on a dedicated gaming console, PC or smartphone, for fun. Some games are played on the Web. Most of the users play without earning from these games.

However, Web3 gaming makes it possible to earn from gaming.

What is Web3 Gaming?

The integration of blockchain into gaming gives us Web3 gaming.

Web3-based gaming, also known as blockchain gaming, refers to gaming that utilizes distributed ledger technology to offer greater transparency, security, democratization and user control over in-game assets.

A common feature of Web3 Gaming is earning. Gamers are able to own in-game assets and earn through cryptocurrencies and NFTs. These assets are interoperable, allowing users to transfer them from one gaming platform to another.

A lot of cryptocurrency projects provide these Web3 gaming experiences through their metaverses, a virtual space where users can experience life. They also reward gamers with their tokens for owning certain in-game assets, and this is gaining a lot of traction today.

Challenges of Web3 Gaming

With all the opportunities and benefits of Web3 gaming come challenges. Some of the challenges are:

Scalability: Networks must be capable of handling massive amounts of data and transactions created by gaming apps quickly and efficiently. If this is not taken care of, user experiences will be greatly hampered.

Adoption and User Awareness: The potential of Web3 gaming will not be known if users are unaware that Web3 exists. Creating awareness of this earning opportunity would foster its adoption.

Network fees: Network fees are necessary for the blockchain space. These are transaction fees that users have to pay to use a service. High transaction fees reduce the adoption of gaming on platforms.

Some other challenges include the unavailability of marketplaces to sell in-game assets with low transaction fees, the provision of a variety of games by a platform, and ease of access to Web3.
