How Atocha Protocol can help Transition Puzzle Games from Web2 to Web3
The sector of Gaming Finance or GameFi (for short) has made an increasing impact in the crypto industry today. While the world is rapidly moving from Web2.0 to Web3.0, games — which have always been a part of our lives — are not left behind.
Puzzle games, as we know, have been established to be one of the games that keep the human mind alert and make us more critical thinkers. These games are made for problem solving and dissection.
Research states that people who spend more time playing puzzles are generally smarter than those who engage in other genres of games.
In this regard, the advancement of technology witnessed puzzle games transition from Web1.0 and physical gaming, to Web2.0, where central organizations develop these games as mobile and desktop apps.
However, Atocha Protocol is transitioning Puzzle games from Web2.0 to Web3.0, where these games are built and simulated on a decentralized system and both creators and players are in control.
But before we talk about how the protocol will go about this transition, let’s find out what the protocol is about.
What is Atocha Protocol?
Atocha Protocol is an application-specific blockchain and Layer 1 decentralized protocol for puzzle games.
It is a Web3.0 enabled Play to Earn (P2E) and Create to Earn (C2E) puzzle games appchain built on Octopus Network.
Atocha Protocol is built as a community-owned protocol operated by creators, sponsors, players, and enthusiasts.
Atocha Protocol is also working on introducing Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) feature, which will be launched in the nearest future.
The project ideation began in May 2021, making this month 1 year since the project was conceptualized. However, this year is the year when the idea becomes fully invented.
The reason behind the name “Atocha”
‘Atocha’ may be a word you are hardly familiar with, so you might be wondering, “what does it mean?”
The word is derived from a Spanish phrase, “Nuestra Señora de Atocha” meaning “Our Lady of Atocha”.
‘Atocha’, in this context, was a treasure giant ship loaded with a massive amount of treasure. However, it sank deep in the Florida Keys by a hurricane in 1622 and was later recovered in 1985 by adventurers in search of the lost treasure.
What does this say about Atocha Protocol?
The protocol will be a ship of treasurable puzzle games. It will be a simulated world to take brave, smart, and creative minds on a fun adventure of discovering games and unraveling the treasure vested in them to earn them points.
That’s how the system works!
Atocha Protocol is not only for the players of Puzzle Games but also for the creators of these games.
Atocha Protocol will have an NFT feature (upcoming with an upgrade) where those who have great ideas for puzzles and propose their ideas to the protocol and be onboarded and these games will be converted into NFTs. Creators hold ownership of their created games which can be tradable.
This means Atocha Protocol will be built on an NFT standard with NFT toolsets to make the next-generation online puzzle games.
Now, what is Atocha Protocol’s game plan in transitioning puzzle games from Web2 to Web3?
Let’s get right to it.
How Atocha Protocol is Transitioning Puzzle Games from Web2 to Web3
Whereas Web2 operates a server-client structure where private corporations build and have some sort of monopolistic control over the protocols they build and own the data, Web3 takes away control from the builders and puts it in the hands of everyone in the ecosystem.
Web3 is a peer-to-peer decentralized network where data are stored on servers and can be accessed by everyone in the ecosystem. Every user is in control, hence, there is accountability in the system.
Atocha Protocol is changing the course by taking Puzzle Games to Web3.
With Atocha Protocol, puzzle game metadata are stored in Arweave, a perma-web decentralized storage service (so technically it is a collection of servers). In other words, the creator will have 100% control over their content and even Atocha Protocol has no right over the metadata.
Certain features of the Atocha Protocol make it a truly decentralized Web3 Protocol for Puzzle Games. What are they?
1. Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO)
Atocha Protocol will put in place a Web3 idealism where the protocol built for a community will be governed by a community. (This feature will be made available in future upgrades.)
Holders of the Atocha Protocol official native tokens, $ATO will have the right to discuss and vote on proposals/decisions made in the ecosystem.
This will cover decisions on:
✓ Game mechanism,
✓ Collaboration proposals,
✓ Marketing proposals,
✓ The protocol economics, etc.
The aim is to build a core community of strong and passionate members dedicated to keeping the ecosystem up and running. Early supporters will be the pillar of the DAO.
2. Decentralized Gameplay
Atocha Protocol has a Game Mechanism that is unique to the protocol. This mechanism is structured in such a way that it affects a fair and rewarding gaming experience for all of its users — gamers, creators, and sponsors.
The mechanisms include:
a. The Rewards & Points System — users and creators who are proactive and of good behavior get incentivized.
b. Challenge System — this system is enforced to prove the fairness and authenticity of every game created and played.
c. Effective & Non-effective Puzzle — the result from the challenge system shows which games are effective or non-effective and based on this result, there are outcomes.
Puzzle games on Atocha Protocol pass through phases; from the Puzzle Creation to the Final Judgement & Rewards Distribution stage.
i. Puzzle Creation
The creator creates the puzzle. As an option, a creator can create with any amount of sponsor in $ATO.
ii. Puzzle Solving
In this phase, solvers solve the puzzle with very little gas fees. Sponsors and solvers can sponsor the puzzle with $ATO and generate Atocha Points daily.
iii. Puzzle Challenge
When the puzzle ends either with a correct answer or an answer revealed by the Creator, the puzzle is opened for a challenge by the community if they doubt the answer and suspect some malicious act.
In this phase, sponsorship and Atocha Points accumulation ends.
iv. Arbitration & Judgement
Following the challenge of the game, arbitration is initiated and judgment based on the cases of the challenge will be conducted by Judges which consists of non-conflict community members and the Atocha core team to ascertain if the puzzle is effective or non-effective.
v. Final Judgement & Reward Redistribution
The arbitration phase will prove if the puzzle is effective or non-effective.
If non-effective (rejected puzzle), Atocha Points are burned and the Challenge deposits and rewards are sent to the Challengers.
If effective (which may an accepted or unchallenged puzzle), the reward will be distributed in one of the two ways:
✓ When solved by a gamer, rewards will the split evenly between Creator and Solver.
✓ When revealed by a Creator, rewards are all given to the Creator.
Note: Sponsoring a puzzle with $ATO is optional. However, it is only when a puzzle is sponsored, that is when Atocha Points (AP) can be generated.
AP = the amount of $ATO sponsored × days.
Hence, the migration of Puzzle Games from Web2 to Web3 by Atocha Protocol has enabled a system where members have a say over the outcome of their results.
3. Monetization of Puzzle Games via Atocha Points.
Web3 has made it possible for gamers to earn while playing games. However, Puzzle Games have been lacking in the Web3 space and Atocha Protocol has brought it up to the limelight.
Atocha Protocol is both a Play to Earn (P2E) and Create to Earn (C2E) protocol meaning both players and creators can earn Atocha Points which can be converted to $ATO tokens.

With decentralization and the infrastructure of Web3, Puzzle Games will be revolutionized and the next big gameplay on the blockchain through the Atocha Protocol.
